Congress Urges Action Against Fraud in Buen Fin

The Federal Consumer Prosecutor's Office (Profeco) corrected 44 cases of misleading advertising and removed 55 ads, it recently reported. In light of this situation, the Congress of Mexico City has requested Profeco and the National Commission for the Protection and Defense of Users of Financial Services (Condusef) to implement protection mechanisms and dissemination campaigns to prevent fraud.

Legislator Ernesto Villarreal CantĂș emphasized the importance of maintaining special vigilance during Buen Fin 2024, as only 52 percent of the products evaluated in previous editions actually reduced their prices. The main reasons for complaints were non-fulfillment of offers or promotions, cancellations of purchases, and delays in delivery.

According to Profeco's figures, the suppliers with the most complaints were Grupo Walmart, Soriana, and Elektra. Although Buen Fin 2024 will take place from November 15 to 18, a study by Apinnio revealed that 23 percent of shoppers suspect that retailers raise prices before announcing their promotions. Furthermore, only 19 percent of consumers fully trust the legitimacy of the offers.

The market research consultancy also indicated that despite the doubts, 92 percent of Mexicans plan to make purchases during Buen Fin 2024 and 77 percent plan their purchases in advance. In contrast, during last year's event, there were 410 complaints, representing a decrease of 21 percent compared to the previous edition. The entities with the most complaints during Buen Fin 2023 were Mexico City, the State of Mexico, and Jalisco.
